Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about fishing in Bahía Solano
What the expedition includes, what experience level is needed, how to get there, which season is best and how booking works. Direct answers about sportfishing in the Colombian Pacific.
What is the best time to fish for marlin in the Colombian Pacific?
The blue and black marlin season in Bahía Solano runs from October to January. It is also the most varied season of the year, with sailfish, mahi-mahi, wahoo and tuna on the same trip. Outside that season marlin is possible but stops being the realistic target.
What is the best season to fish in Bahía Solano?
It depends on the species you are after: not every month is peak season. The calendar breaks into five seasons. October to January: offshore season with the widest variety — blue marlin, black marlin, sailfish, mahi-mahi, wahoo, tuna — trolling and spinning. February to March: cold water, big fish — cubera snapper, other snappers, large tuna — vertical jigging. April to June: sardine migration and high fishing volume — sailfish, yellowfin tuna, some tarpon — spinning and trolling. June to July: inshore fishing with lures — roosterfish, tarpon — spinning. July to October: humpback whale season, more than fishing — mahi-mahi, tuna — these may show, but it is not peak fishing.
How do I get to Bahía Solano from Medellín?
Bahía Solano has no road access. You get there on a flight of about 35 minutes from Olaya Herrera Airport in Medellín, with a night in Medellín before departure. The way back repeats it: a domestic flight to Medellín and another night there before the international flight, planned that way on purpose so a delay will not make you miss your connection. For international travellers, both domestic flights, both hotel nights in Medellín and transfers within the city are covered; in Bahía Solano, accommodation and transfers are covered for everyone. The baggage limit is stricter than usual, so it is best to travel light.
What does a COFCO expedition include?
It depends on whether you travel from outside Colombia or within the country. For everyone: transfers and accommodation in Bahía Solano, all meals at the hotel and on the boat, drinks and snacks during fishing days, professional gear, live bait and tackle. For international travellers, the round-trip Medellín–Bahía Solano domestic flights, two hotel nights in Medellín (on arrival and on the return, the latter so delays do not cause a missed international connection) and transfers within the city are added. It does not include international flights, alcoholic drinks or gratuities.
Do I need previous experience to fish with COFCO?
No. The team guides everyone from people who have never held a rod to anglers chasing IGFA records. The expedition adapts to your level and goals, and the June to July inshore season, with roosterfish and tarpon, is the most accessible place to start.
Do I have to bring my own fishing gear?
Not necessary. We provide quality gear for every method, both offshore and inshore. If you prefer to fish with your own gear you are welcome to bring it, bearing in mind the baggage limit on the flight to Bahía Solano.
How do you handle safety in such a remote area?
COFCO operates with all legal permits and is registered with Colombia's National Tourism Registry under number 245339. Boats carry a VHF radio and there are defined emergency protocols for remote locations. We recommend that each traveller brings their own travel insurance.
Can I fish and see whales on the same trip?
Yes, between July and October, which is when humpback whales come to the coast of Bahía Solano. Worth knowing that this is not the peak fishing season: mahi-mahi and tuna may show, but if marlin is your main target the October to January season is far better.
How big is the group?
We work with small groups. This is not a mass operation: never more than 2 boats on the same date. It is a deliberate limit, so nobody ends up waiting their turn on the rod.
What boat do you fish from?
From a 2025 center-console boat with twin Suzuki 200 HP outboards and 150 gallons of fuel. It carries a sounder, GPS, VHF, outriggers, a livewell, tuna tubs and an iced cooler; life jackets and a first-aid kit are aboard. The fleet is two identical boats and never more than one goes out per group.
Who guides the expeditions?
Julián Quintana, a captain with 13+ years in the Colombian Pacific, runs COFCO and designs every expedition in advance: areas, timing and target species by season. On the water his captain and the local Bahía Solano team guide; when two boats run on the same date, each day follows the plan Julián prepared.
Do you practise catch and release?
Yes. We practise catch and release with responsible handling so the fish goes back in the water able to survive. Keeping fish is limited to what is reasonable for meals on board.
How do I book an expedition?
The process is: contact on WhatsApp, expedition designed around your dates, transparent quote, booking with a deposit and a pre-trip briefing. We do not publish prices on the site because they depend on group size and the season.
